Kendrick Lamar Shares Why He Likes To Completely Avoid Social Media Despite Having Millions of Followers: I Can Easily Smell My Own Sh*t

Kendrick Lamar is not a fan of social media.

In fact, the 35-year-old “B*tch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” rapper makes a concerted effort to completely avoid social media, mostly because he doesn’t want to allow his ego to prevent him from experiencing his own blessings.

During a recent interview, Kendrick Lamar said,

“My social media, most of the time, is completely off. Because I know, like … I can easily smell my own [expletive]. I know. … Like, I’m not one of those dudes that be like, Oh, yeah, I know how good I am, but I also know the reason why I’m so good is because God’s blessed me with the talent to execute on the talent, and the moment that you start getting lost in your ego, that’s when you start going down.”

Kendrick Lamar has 12.3 million followers on Instagram and 12.1 million on Twitter, despite his avoidance and lack of updates. While he’s a man of many words when it comes to spitting lyrics, he prefers to maintain a certain level of privacy when it comes to his personal life.

As previously reported, he shared in a rare interview with Citizen Magazine, which was conducted while he was on a trip to Ghana, that his privacy is important to him regardless of his celebrity status.

K. Dot said,

“The person that people see now is the person that I’ve always been. For me, the privacy thing has never been an issue that I had to carry out with full intention. It’s just who I am. If I feel I have to remove myself, I just remove myself. I won’t complain about it. I won’t cause a big blow-up or a big stir and let the world know that the walls are closing in.”

Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, the Grammy- and Pulitzer-award-winning artist’s fifth studio album, was released in May of this year following a five-year hiatus. The album — his most personable to date — has already earned K. Dot several accolades, including eight Grammy nominations.

We Cry Together, the short film written by K. Dot and linked to the song of the same name, is also eligible for the 95th Academy Awards nominations. During his latest interview, he talked about the project and said,

“I’ve never expressed myself the way I expressed myself on this album. From the moment I started picking up a pen and started freestyling. This was the moment that I was trying to get to without even knowing at the time.”

K. Dot previously opened up about the feelings he had before releasing the project, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The father of two contemplated not releasing it at all, thinking of how it would affect his children in the future.

He said,

“When I got to completion and I said, ‘I may or may not put this out; I’m not going to put this out; it’s way too much,’ I thought about my children.”

The Compton native added,

“I thought about when they turn 21, or they’re older in life, and when I got grandchildren, or if I’m long gone—this can be a prerequisite of how to cope. That’s the beauty of it for me.”

Discussing touching on personal family matters on the album, K. Dot said,

“I’m a private person; it was tough for me.”
