Drake Says He Regrets Mentioning His Ex-Girlfriends In His Music + Claims He’s Never Made A Girl’s Name Up
It appears Drake is reconsidering name-dropping the women he’s been romantically involved with in his music.
During a recent interview with Lil Yachty on the premiere episode of “Moody Conversations,” influential hip-hop artist Drake shared that he regrets shouting out his ex-girlfriends by name in his songs.
The Canadian rapper/singer reportedly said,
“I heard it the other night. I think that, and sometimes when I’ve said girls’ names in songs, maybe those are the two things that I look back on, and I’m like, ‘Maybe I coulda done without, like, sh*tting on people for age or disrupting somebody’s life.’”
Although he didn’t mention them, it appears Drake was seemingly referring to his 2013 track “From Time” off “Nothing Was the Same,” on which he reportedly sounds off names including Porsche, Summer, Bria, and Courtney.
Drake, real name Aubrey Drake Graham, added,
“The lyrics are never with ill intent, but I had somebody tell me one time, ‘You know, it’s not necessarily what you’re saying about me, it’s the fact that you said it.’”
The 36-year-old went on and elaborated on a conversation he had with his ex, in which she told the musician he doesn’t know how his lyrics can impact her life. Reportedly mimicking their conversation, Drake continued and said,
“‘You don’t know who my boyfriend is at the time, or you don’t know what my family knows or doesn’t know. And if you express any form of discontent for me and call me by name in a song, then all of a sudden I’m left to pick up the pieces of my own life that I’ve tried to build up for myself.’”
He concluded with,
“So I’ve tried my best to stop doing that. But I like to be honest in music too, so that one’s a push and pull.”
During the sit down, when Lil Yachty said he thought the OVO artist was “just making girls’ names up” in his songs, Drake confirmed that the names mentioned are all real names. The “God’s Plan” rapper claimed,
“I don’t think I’ve ever made a girl’s name up. Ever in life.”
As previously reported, fellow rapper Kodak Black seemingly shared he isn’t into making music with Drake at the moment.
During an Instagram Live stream that took place on February 21, the Florida rapper shared that he had intended to drop a project with Drake but the debut of Drizzy’s collab “Her Loss” album with 21 Savage made him reconsider.
Kodak Black said,
“I had told Drake I ain’t wanna do no collab actually.”
He continued,
“No songs or no album, ’cause we supposed to been did a whole album together before him and lil buddy did that sh*t.”
Kodak Black added,
“I had told him I wanted to wait, like 2023, after February.”
