Tyler Perry Opens Up About Disciplining His 8-Year-Old Son w/ Compassion: ‘I Realized That Nobody Ever Had A Conversation w/ Me That I Could Understand’

Filmmaker Tyler Perry recently recalled a “beautiful moment” he shared with his 8-year-old son Aman.

In a clip from Audible’s “Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast,” airing Tuesday (Mar. 14), Tyler Perry and the former First Lady sat down for a candid conversation to discuss an emotional moment he had while parenting his son Aman.

During their conversation, the 53-year-old media mogul, who shares Aman with ex Gelila Bekele, chats about a time when he was once overcome with emotion as he disciplined his son with compassion. The moving moment occured after the little boy refused to brush his teeth when at home with their nanny.

Tyler Perry began with,

“I walk in the room and we have a nanny who was helping us out and [Aman’s] just giving them business, he didn’t want to brush his teeth. He’s about 5 or 6 then and didn’t want to brush his teeth. He didn’t know I was in the door, I watched him for a minute, and then I had the nanny leave and I got down eye-to-eye and talked to him.”

Perry recalls telling Aman,

“I said, ‘Listen to me, you are not going to be this way. We love you. We are your parents. You will not behave this way. We taught you better than this. You are a better kid than this. You’re going to be a better man than this.’ And I’m talking to him. I started to get emotional in the moment and I had to leave the room.”

While his son reportedly apologized and proceeded to brush his teeth, Perry says he continued to get emotional after having a sudden realization about his own upbringing.

The billionaire tells Michelle Obama,

“I went out on the balcony I was in tears because I realized that nobody had ever talked, got down and talked to me eye-to-eye and had a conversation with me that I could understand. There was just yelling and cussing and what you’re not and what you’re never going to be.”

He adds,

“So to have a moment where I had a chance to have a conversation with a child, who is my spitting image, I was not only correcting and leading him the right way but helping my own little boy inside of me heal, it was a beautiful moment.”

In other Tyler Perry news, the film/TV creator is reportedly in talks to purchase a majority stake of BET Media Group amid reports that parent company Paramount Global is exploring a sale. Perry’s deal with Paramount, which began in 2017, is reportedly coming to an end. If this BET purchase occurs, this would give him ownership of the brand that airs many of his shows.

The entertainer currently has a minority stake in the operation and also produces a large portion of the programming available on BET and streaming service BET+, which he helped launch in 2019. Perry currently has a list of TV shows available on BET and BET+ including “House of Payne,” “Sistas,” “The Oval,” “Ruthless,” “Zatima,” and “Assisted Living.”
