President Obama Dined With Michael B. Jordan, Regina King, and Janelle Monae For “Intimate Creative Discussions”

Barack Obama and his production company Higher Ground recently hosted back-to-back dinners earlier this month, inviting a slew of Oscar winners, nominees and creative talent.

Joining Obama and Higher Ground execs were A-listers, Michael B. Jordan, Ryan Coogler, Regina King, Colman Domingo, and Janelle Monae, to name a few.

According to an insider, Obama had no specific agenda for the dinners other than to converse with those he and his team are either working with, have relationships with or are simply fans of for an intimate discussion amongst creatives.

Formed in 2018, Higher Ground has a TV and film deal with Netflix, and has made several films, including American FactoryBecoming — a documentary on Michelle Obama’s book tour. It also created Crip Camp and Descendent in Oct. 2022. Each film was nominated for an Emmy and/or Academy Award.

Last year, the company added two Emmy wins to its collection. “Ada Twist, Scientist” and “We The People” — both featured on Netflix — won awards for Outstanding Preschool Animated Series and Outstanding Short Form Program at the inaugural Children’s and Family Emmy Awards. This brings the production company’s total Emmy wins to three.

It looks like the creative bug runs in the Obama family. As previously reported, Malia Obama made her screenwriting debut on the new series “Swarm.”

While “Swarm” was created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, Malia Obama made a big contribution to the show. According to reports, Malia Obama co-wrote the series’ fifth episode “Girl, Bye” alongside showrunner Nabers.

Nabers recently spoke on how Malia Obama’s ideas helped bring the overall storyline together. She said,

“[‘Girl, Bye’] is probably one of the wildest episodes. I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people. It’s pretty dope. I’m really proud of it.”

Nabers continued to praise the former first daughter.

“Some of her pitches were wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny. She’s an incredible writer. She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft. I’m really excited for everyone to get to know her work, and the work of the writers on a show.”
