Normani Recalls Fifth Harmony Being ‘One of The Lowest Points’ For Her Confidence During Her Transition To A Solo Career
Normani Hamilton is still finding her way and building her confidence as a solo artist.
The “Motivation” singer, 27, began her musical career as a member of Fifth Harmony, enjoying mainstream popularity before the girl group took an indefinite hiatus in 2018. She’s achieved solo success following her split from the group, landing several Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the past five years.
With the upcoming release of her new single, “Candy Paint,” the recording artist is getting candid about her transition from Fifth Harmony to soloist.
Normani said,
“I started in a girl group [Fifth Harmony] when I was 15. I remember that being one of the lowest points for me in terms of my confidence.”
She continued,
“We’re young, we’re trying to figure out who we are on top of having to do that in front of the rest of the world, while they pit us against each other, and then the things that people project on you, you kind of start to believe.”
And this isn’t the first time Normani has discussed how Fifth Harmony affected her confidence, particularly as a Black woman. During an interview with Women’s Health in 2020, she said,
“[It] alters the perception you have of yourself. Having certain things happen so blatantly while also feeling like the ‘other’ and being so young and hearing the public compare [us] took a toll on my confidence.”

She added,
“For a long time, I didn’t believe in myself because I didn’t feel like I was given the opportunity to.”
Speaking encouraging words to herself both then and now has helped Normani feel more confident, and she doesn’t ever want to lose sight of her beauty or grace again.
She added,
“I’ve worked so hard in my adult life [over] the last two to three years. It’s a daily fight. I can’t say that every day is the same, but I’m just really intentional. I speak words of affirmation to myself. I’ve gotten a lot closer to God and I know that through that I’m able to know who I am and who I’m called to be versus the things that people put on me.”
Normani‘s discography also includes “Love Lies” with Khalid, “Dancing with a Stranger” with Sam Smith, “Wild Side” with Cardi B and “Waves” with 6lack.
