Drake Recalls ‘Getting High’ Right Before His ‘Degrassi’ Audition Due To ‘Peer Pressure’
Drake recently took a trip down memory lane and reflected on his younger years.
On Wednesday (July 5), the Canadian rapper shared via Instagram a voice recording where he admitted to getting high right before his “Degrassi” audition. Prior to his successful music career, Drake, 36, got his start playing Jimmy Brooks on “Degrassi: The Next Generation.”
He stated in the video post,
“Someone asked me the other night what my biggest fear is, and I’ve never really had a good answer for it, but my answer was that all this is for nothing. The idea that one day life ends and it just all goes black.”

Drake said the question sent him into a “deep spiral of thought” about how “surreal” life is, which then led him to think back on his younger years and the beginning of his acting career.
The “Rich Flex” rapper then reflected on a time when he “succumbed to peer pressure.”
“I go back to this day when I was like 13 or 14. I had an audition for a TV show that ultimately shaped my life. Before my audition, I went to this kid’s house. And I, out of, I guess, a desire to be accepted, I would succumb to peer pressure, and I got high with these kids right before my audition.”
The Grammy winner added he thinks about how life would have been if “something bad” had happened the day of his “Degrassi” audition and whether his life — and all of his success — is real or his imagination.
“You know, maybe I’m still high, maybe I’m in some coma. And this is just, like, me playing out my ideal life. That concept has stuck with me for a lot of years.”
Prior to him becoming one of the biggest rappers in the world, Drake starred on “Degrassi” from 2001 to 2009 as Jimmy Brooks. The fictional character is a popular basketball player who got shot in the back in Season 4 and became paralyzed from the waist down.
The Canadian teen drama series, which ran for 14 seasons from 2001 to 2015, focuses on the students of Degrassi Community School as they tackle challenges such as sex, teen pregnancy, bullying, date rape, drug abuse, body image, homosexuality, domestic violence, and more.
In 2018, the “One Dance” rapper reunited with the cast of the hit series when he put them in his music video for his song “I’m Upset.” In the music video, Drake featured his former co-stars — including Shane Kippel (Spinner), Miriam MacDonald (Emma), Lauren Collins (Paige), Cassie Steele (Manny), and Nina Dobrev (Mia), among others.
