Update: ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’ Decides To Delay Return Amid Ongoing Hollywood Strikes + Sherri Shepherd Sticks To Initial Premiere Date

Update: (Sept. 18, 2023): Looks like Jennifer Hudson won’t be crossing the picket line after all.

As previously reported, “The Jennifer Hudson Show” was among the list of talk shows set to make a return soon despite the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. However, new reports claim Jennifer has had a change of heart and won’t be kicking off the second season of her talk series today (Sept. 18).  A new date for the premier has not yet been announced.

“The Talk” recently announced it has decided to postpone its season premiere as well. CBS said in a recently shared statement,

“We will continue to evaluate plans for a new launch date.”

Some talk shows have decided to stick to their initial return plans. According to reports, season 27 of “The View” kicked off on Sept. 5 and Sherri Shepherd’s talk series “Sherri” premiered season two today. However, it’s important to note that, unlike Jennifer, Sherri reportedly doesn’t work with WGA (Writers Guild of America) writers.

In addition, reports claim “The View” is in compliance with SAG-AFTRA and WGA rules because it’s under the “Network Code,” which is a different contract than what’s being protested.

Original Story: (Sept. 12, 2023): Fans of daytime TV will be glad to learn two popular talk shows are set to return soon.

According to recent reports, both “The Jennifer Hudson Show” and “Sherri” will drop their second seasons this month amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Reportedly, both shows are currently in production and expected to return on September 18th. Much to fans’ enjoyment, the breakout talk shows were renewed earlier this year following their stellar first-year performances.

However, Their decision to return at this time may be slightly controversial due to the continued Hollywood strikes that have shut down several productions. As you may already know, both actors (Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) and writers (Writers Guild of America) are seeking improvements within the industry such as better wages and long-term security.

Earlier this week, actress Drew Barrymore came under fire for standing firm on her choice to resume production of her own talk series amid the strikes.

In a lengthy post, the entertainer explained that she walked away from hosting the MTV Awards because it directly dealt with concerns posed by WGA and SAG-AFTRA. However, the “Charlie’s Angels” star defended her decision to return to her talk show. In part, she wrote:

“I am…making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me. I own this choice. We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind….And so I take a step forward to start season 4 once again with an astute humility.”

Barrymore’s decision seemingly drew criticism due to the fact that she will be unable to bring on WGA writers, which she reportedly has done in the past. It seems Jennifer Hudson has this same issue with her show. Reports note that the EGOT holder did in fact employ union writers during season 1 of her hit talk series and will likely face protests, as Barrymore has, due to moving on without them.

Sherri Shepherd reportedly does not have that same problem, however. It’s noted that the comedian’s series, like “The Tamron Hall Show,” doesn’t work with WGA writers and reportedly never ceased production in the first place.

Other talk series such as “Live With Kelly and Ryan” and “The View” have also reportedly continued production amid the strikes. Reportedly, despite the backlash, all the talk series’ remain in compliance with SAG-AFTRA and WGA rules because their shows are covered under the “Network Code,” which is a different contract than what people in Hollywood are protesting.

Songstress Kelly Clarkson seems to be the only entertainer not bringing her talk show back at this time. However, as the show is also undergoing a location change – moving from LA to New York – it remains unclear whether or not it is in solidarity with the strikes.

Neither Hudson nor Shepherd has spoken about their coming seasons publicly at this time. The official social media pages for “Sherri,” however, did release a new trailer showcasing some exciting segments coming to the show!
