Jada Pinkett Smith Thought Will Smith Oscars Slap Was a ‘Skit’ + Reveals They’ve Been Separated Since 2016

One thing for certain…Jada Pinkett Smith is going to tell her truth!

As previously reported, the 52-year-old actress is gearing up for the release of her memoir “Worthy,” which will be available for purchase on Oct. 17. During a recent sitdown with journalist Hoda Kotb, Jada Pinkett Smith chatted about secrets revealed in her latest project and elaborated on the shocking news that she and her husband Will Smith, 55, separated in 2016.

After confirming they didn’t legally end their union but it was still a “divorce,” Jada Pinkett Smith explained why they continued to act like a couple for years even though they weren’t.

“[We were] still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership…and in regards to how do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out.”

Jada Pinkett Smith and “The Fresh Prince” star married in 1997 and share two children together – Jaden and Willow. Will Smith also has another son – Trey – with Sheree Zampino.

Later in the segment, Jada continued,

“Why [the relationship] fractured…that — that’s a lot of things … By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”

She added,

“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever. I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

When asked where they currently stand, the “Girls Trip” entertainer replied,

“We live separately.

Some might be stunned to learn that Jada and Will are legally married but no longer together. As you may recall, during the 2022 Academy Awards, Will infamously slapped Chris Rock for making a controversial joke about Jada. He then yelled,

“Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth.”

In a separate interview, Jada touched on the crazy incident and shared she thought it was all a “skit.” She said,

“I thought, ‘This is a skit.’ I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”

Jada Pinkett Smith’s full conversation with Hoda Kotb is set to air on NBC Friday (Oct. 13) at 8/7c.
