Jerrod Carmichael Calls Dave Chappelle An ‘Egomaniac’ As He Speaks On Issues w/ Veteran Comic
Two well-known comics are (still) at odds.
In 2021, Dave Chappelle faced criticism over jokes seemingly aimed at the trans community in his Netflix special “The Closer.” As previously reported, the controversial standup performance sparked backlash from many, including employees of the streaming giant who staged a walk-out in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
Fellow comic Jerrod Carmichael, 36, was among those who questioned Dave Chappelle’s material. In a 2022 profile piece, The “On the Count of Three” actor spoke on his issues with Dave Chappelle’s sense of humor and said,
“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans sh*t? It’s an odd hill to die on. And it’s like, ‘Hey, bro. Who the f*ck are you? Who do you f*ck? What do you like to do?’”
During a recent interview, he elaborated on his problems with Chappelle. In case you missed it, Jerrod Carmichael came out as gay in his April 2022 HBO special “Rothaniel.” Chappelle According to the entertainer, Chappelle joked about his set and “referred to it as the bravest special for 1996.”
He continued,
“And it’s like, that’s a funny enough line, whatever, but I wonder if he gets the irony that the fact that you are mocking it even then is why it was hard.”
Jerrod Carmichael then claimed Chappelle felt some type of way about his previous criticism and wanted a public apology.
“He took it as ‘F*ck Dave Chappelle,’ because he’s an egomaniac. He wanted me to apologize to him publicly or some sh*t.”
He added to his criticism of Chappelle, claiming the 50-year-old is,
“not revealing anything personal about himself and he’s removed from what he’s talking about, and I think he’s smarter than that and deeper than that and has more interesting thoughts.”
