Reggie Bush On Having His Heisman Trophy Returned After Nearly 15 Years: ‘No One Can Take From You What God Has For You’
It’s a good day for sports fans!
News broke this morning (Apr. 24) that retired NFL player Reggie Bush has (finally) gotten his 2005 Heisman Trophy back! For those who may not be football savvy, the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most notable player in college football each year. Reggie Bush had to forfeit the prestigious honor in 2010 after an NCAA investigation reportedly revealed he and his family received financial benefits during his time playing for the University of Southern California. Things for college athletes were a lot different then, mainly because they could not receive compensation for their name, image, and likeness (NIL) as they can now.
In an Instagram post showing off his returned Heisman Trophy, Reggie Bush wrote,
“No one can take from you what God has for you.”
In a statement shared with ESPN, he also said,
“Personally, I’m thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I’m honored to return to the Heisman family. I also look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization.”
Speaking on the decision to reinstate Bush’s award, Michael Comerford, president of The Heisman Trophy Trust, said,
“We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments. We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back.”
In addition to Bush receiving his title and award back, a replica was also given to USC. The former New Orleans Saints star will be invited to all future Heisman Trophy ceremonies starting with the upcoming football season.
Congratulations to Reggie Bush!
