Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Criticizes American ‘Nakedness’ Following Meghan Markle Visit: ‘That Is Not Beautiful At All’
Megan Markle may have unintentionally offended Nigerian officials.
Weeks after she visited the African country, Nigeria’s First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu gave a vehement speech condemning the “nakedness” of American celebrities, warning her citizens to be weary of influence.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu
Reports state that Senator Oluremi Tinubu gave a speech at an event commemorating her husband President Bola Tinubu’s first administration when she made the remarks. Addressing parents and young citizens in the crowd, the politician urged the youth and guardians to dress modestly and warned citizens against taking inspiration from racy American fashion styles. She stated:
“We have to salvage our children…We see the way they dress. They keep forgetting that Nigeria, we are beautiful. …We are not having the Met Gala. And everyone, the nakedness, is just everywhere and the men are well-clothed.”

She continued:
“Tell them the way it is, we don’t accept nakedness in our culture. That is not beautiful. It’s not beautiful at all.”
Though Senator Oluremi Tinubu didn’t address Megan Markle’s wardrobe directly, she did use the former British royal as a reason why Nigerian citizens should be confident in their heritage and not try to take after American celebrities. She added:
“They don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with [us]. We know who we are. Don’t lose who you are.”

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle
Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry reportedly visited Nigeria recently on a promotional tour for the the Invictus Games. The actress shared her excitement to be there, especially since she said she recently learned that she’s 43% Nigerian according to a DNA test. However, Markle’s trip was met with controversy; many discussed the appropriateness of her wardrobe, which showed her arms and shoulders.

One report notes that a ‘fashion expert’ believes that Markle “bared too much skin” and surmised that if the trip had been organized by Buckingham Palace she likely would’ve dressed more conservatively. As you may know, Prince Harry and Markle stepped down from their royal positions (though they keep their titles) following racially charged criticism about Markle, her marriage to the Prince, and their children. The couple now reside in California with their kids Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie.

It does not appear that Markle has commented publicly about the matter.
