Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner Says He Stopped Listening To J. Cole’s Music Because He Got Tired Of Hearing The N-Word
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known for his role in The Cosby Show, is letting the world know exactly how he feels about certain explicit words in hip hop lyrics.
The 53-year-old actor sat down with Candace O.Kelley and Weusi Baraka for the inaugural episode of the Not All Hood podcast, where the conversation turned to rap lyrics, specifically Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s disdain for the use of the n-word and the word b****.
He stated,
“I’m more against it now because it’s used so gratuitously. It’s used without regard. At this point, there should be a moratorium on both of these words in hip hop. It’s low-lying fruit, it’s so easy, everybody f****** does it… to the point that it’s corny.”
Mentioning the rapper J. Cole, he continued,
“I love J. Cole, but I had to stop listening because I got tired of hearing n**** and b**** every two sentences. He’s proven himself to be such an incredible lyricist… but as an artist, it feels lazy.”
Social media caught wind of the segment and some chimed in with similar thoughts.
One X user wrote,
“Early on in J. Cole’s career he used “n****” in almost every other bar. It was extremely annoying and why I stopped listening to him after his first album. When it’s used obsessively it takes away from the music because it shows poor penmanship.”
However, another X user disagreed, stating,
“Not a fan of the word myself, but J. Cole being used as an example is insane out of all rappers. He’s quite tame compared to others.”
