MC Lyte Says ‘I Wasn’t Really Present’ As She Takes Accountability For Part She Played In Her Divorce

MC Lyte is candidly reflecting on her part in the dissolution of her marriage.

The 52-year-old rapper and host participated in a panel discussion at a recent MusiCares Humans of Hip Hop event. When asked about a pivotal moment where she needed to “tap in,” MC Lyte referenced a period of reflection following the divorce from her now ex-husband John Wyche.

MC Lyte stated,

“A time where I needed to tap in… was at the brink of a divorce. It was, ‘What was my part in this?’ Just claiming responsibility and realizing that I wasn’t really present as I thought I was.”

She continued,

“At that point, I have to do self-inventory. I’ve got to check what’s holding me back. What are the things that I need to take a look at… Being able to empathize and listen to what’s actually happening with people was one of the main factors that I needed to tap into and become aware of how listening is loving.”

She concluded,

“Not just my marriage with him didn’t work; any marriage wouldn’t have worked because I needed to work on me.”

MC Lyte began dating John Wyche, a Marine Corps veteran and entrepreneur, in early 2016. They announced their engagement in May 2017. In August of that year, they exchanged vows during a wedding ceremony in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Following the intimate ceremony with close friends and family, MC Lyte filed for divorce in August 2020.

In a previous interview, MC Lyte shared her feelings about the divorce, stating,

“I think in the very beginning I was very distraught. I feel like there are phases whenever a relationship is ending whether you’re married or not. It’s that first phase of, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to make this work for us’. Then it’s like, ‘Oh my God I’ve got to make this work for everybody else involved. The family, if there are children, people who flew all the way to wherever to see you married.’”

In January, theJasmineBRAND reported that MC Lyte was dating Aaron Johnson, a 43-year-old professional in the tech industry. They first met at a philanthropic event and had reportedly been in a relationship for over a year.

At that time, Lyte posted a picture of them on her Instagram with the caption:

“This is Winning. 2023. . . I’m ready.”
