Oprah & Gayle King Shut Down Rumors They’re Secretly Lesbians: ‘If We Were Gay We Would’ve Told You’

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King are putting longstanding speculation to rest.

The two friends appeared in Melinda Gates’ Moments That Make Us series and opened up about their infamous bond, including rumors that they are secret lovers.

They both noted how they’ve been open about their public and private lives as Oprah Winfrey stated,

“We’ve shared pretty much everything and I have to say it wasn’t even a matter of navigation. For years, people used to say we were gay and we were up against that forever. And people still think it.”

Gayle King added that she often pleads with Oprah Winfrey to “do a show on this” to clear the air, adding,

“It’s hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night with people thinking we’re gay. Because if we were gay we would tell you.”

Melinda Gates commended the friends for proving that women can have deep-rooted friendships.

Oprah agreed and said,

“I was beginning to think ‘Maybe people aren’t accustomed to seeing women with this kind of truth bond.’ Meaning, the reason why I think our friendship has worked is because Gayle is happier, not happy, but happier for me for any kind of success or victory or challenge I get through than I am for myself … I am equally as happy for her.”

She recalled hanging out with another friend who seemingly shaded her for “getting another black dress” while they were shopping.

“And I thought, ‘Hmm… well, yeah I am getting another black dress.’ And just the tone in which it was said… you can’t be friends with anybody who has a hint of jealousy about anything that you’re doing… or anything that you have. If you see that in somebody…you cannot. You have to distance yourself, or you have to cut that thing off.”

Gayle King confessed that she didn’t think their friendship was unusual and thought that most women have at least one close friend.
