Deputy Who Fatally Shot Sonya Massey Claims He Thought She Intended to ‘Kill’ Him After She Said ‘I Rebuke You In The Name Of Jesus’
More details surrounding the tragic death of 36-year-old Sonya Massey have surfaced.
According to a deputy’s field report released on Monday (Aug. 5), Sean Grayson, the former Illinois sheriff’s deputy responsible for killing Sonya Massey, said he believed his life was in danger. As previously reported, on July 6, Sean Grayson, 30, and another officer arrived at Sonya Massey’s home over a call about a possible intruder. Unfortunately, what should have been an uneventful check-in turned deadly with Sean Grayson reportedly shooting an unarmed Sonya Massey three times, striking her in the head.
The fatal shooting came after Grayson instructed Massey to remove a pot of boiling water from the stove. While in the kitchen area, bodycam footage captured Massey saying, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” Things quickly shifted from there and Grayson pulled his firearm, threatening to shoot her in the face. Despite an apology from Massey, Grayson still followed through with his threat.
Addressing what unfolded in the deputy’s field report, Grayson claimed he felt “imminent fear” that Massey would throw the pot of boiling water at him, causing him to fire his weapon. He also wrote that he took the “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus” remark as a threat.
“I interpreted this to mean she was going to kill me. I drew my weapon and pointed it at Sonya.”
Following the shooting, Grayson was fired from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s office and indicted by a grand jury on three counts of first-degree murder and one count each of aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.
