Cher Recalls Tina Turner Asking For Advice On Leaving Abusive Relationship w/ Ike Turner
Cher is opening up about being a trusted confidant to Tina Turner during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
In her new memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One, the iconic singer revealed that Tina Turner sought her advice on escaping her abusive husband, Ike Turner, before their 1978 divorce.
Cher recalled a day of filming The Sonny & Cher Show when Tina Turner appeared as a guest. During the shoot, Tina asked Cher to help cover a bruise on her arm with makeup. Later, Tina asked,
“How did you leave Sonny?”
Cher replied,
“I just walked out and kept on going.”
Cher reflected on witnessing Ike’s demeanor during rehearsals, sharing,
“He didn’t smile one time and played his guitar without any emotion.”
Tina eventually left Ike Turner in July 1976 after enduring years of abuse. She escaped with just 36 cents and a gas station credit card, fleeing their Dallas hotel room following a violent altercation.
