Fact-Checkers Say They Were Blindsided By Meta’s Decision To Replace Them w/ Community Notes
Meta’s abrupt decision to replace third-party fact-checking with a Community Notes model on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads has left its fact-checking partners blindsided and scrambling to cope with the financial fallout.
Announced via blog post and video, the shift removes Meta’s partnerships with organizations tasked with combating disinformation since 2016.
Alan Duke of Lead Stories and Jesse Stiller of Check Your Fact both expressed shock at the lack of notice, with Stiller calling the move “unexpected and out of left field.” For some, the loss of funding may jeopardize their survival, while others criticized Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s claim that fact-checkers had become “too politically biased.”
Journalists and experts argue that Community Notes cannot replace expert-led fact-checking, especially for complex topics, and see the decision as a response to political pressure from Trump-aligned figures. Critics, including the Poynter Institute, called Zuckerberg’s claims “a disappointing cop-out,” emphasizing that fact-checkers provide context, not censorship.
