U.S. Transportation Department Sues Southwest, Fines Frontier For Chronic Delays
The U.S. Transportation Department (DOT) has taken legal action against Southwest Airlines and fined Frontier Airlines for operating chronically delayed flights, emphasizing stricter enforcement of passenger protections.
The lawsuit against Southwest, filed in California, alleges the airline illegally operated two persistently delayed routes between 2022, affecting 180 flights over five months. DOT is seeking maximum penalties, with Secretary Pete Buttigieg stating airlines must ensure realistic schedules.
Southwest defended its long-term record, highlighting a 99% completion rate in 2024 and minimal prior violations. Frontier was fined $650,000, half of which will be waived if it avoids further violations for three years.
This move follows a $2 million fine against JetBlue for chronic delays and reflects broader regulatory scrutiny of airlines.
According to Cirium, Southwest ranked fifth for on-time performance in North America, with regulators also examining the carrier’s safety compliance.
