Actor Tyler James Williams Opens Up About Directing His First Episode Of ‘Abbott Elementary: ‘It Was A Challenge, But I Was Ready
Tyler James Williams is taking on new challenges behind the camera.
In an interview with PEOPLE, the Abbott Elementary star opened up about directing his first episode of the hit comedy, and the unexpected difficulties of balancing acting and directing simultaneously.
He admitted,
“[It was] very difficult. I don’t recommend it. It’s a lot to split your brain, I think, and to focus on not only telling the story, but what your piece is to play in telling that story.”
Still, Williams embraced the challenge, saying,
“I knew it was going to be a challenge, but it was one I was ready for, so [I’m glad] I got a chance to do it. I’m also looking forward to the opportunity to be able to do one or the other, and not both all of the time.”

Williams also said working with child actors came naturally to him, noting that he “often preferred kids over adults.” He explained,
“As long as you learn how to speak their language, they want to do a good job. They want to work, their egos are not involved.”
Fans can now stream the episode directed by Tyler James Williams, titled The Science Fair, on Hulu.
