R. Kelly’s Sex Crimes Conviction & 30-Year Sentence Upheld By Federal Appeals Court
R. Kelly’s 30-year prison sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking was upheld by the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals.
The court ruled that R. Kelly exploited his fame for over 25 years to abuse girls and young women. The 2021 Brooklyn federal court conviction included charges of trafficking, and Kelly’s defense lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, believes the Supreme Court may hear an appeal.
R. Kelly’s actions were enabled by managers and staff, as detailed by the court, with victims testifying to physical, verbal, and sexual abuse.
The appeals court found no issues with the trial evidence or the use of graphic videos. While Bonjean criticized a restitution award for one victim, the majority upheld the ruling, emphasizing Kelly’s control over his victims.
Kelly, known for hits like “I Believe I Can Fly,” faced renewed outrage after the Me Too movement and the Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly.”
