John Boyega Says He Had Just $60 In His Account Before Booking ‘Star Wars’ Role
John Boyega was nearly broke when he got the biggest call of his career.
During an appearance at C2E2, the Star Wars actor revealed he had just £45 (about $60) in his account when JJ Abrams called to meet up. “It took £33 and 83p to get to J.J. Do the math,” he said, leaving him with around $17 when he found out he booked the role of Finn in The Force Awakens.
Trying to play it cool, Boyega told Abrams,
“I’m at this art show in Greenwich, mate. I’m very, very busy.”

But he still rushed to the meeting. Abrams told him,
“You’re in Star Wars.” Boyega added, “The moment froze… and then [writer Lawrence Kasdan] walks up and said, ‘Kid, this movie’s gonna change your life.’”
Boyega would go on to star in three Star Wars films.
