Pauletta Washington Reacts To Husband Denzel Washington’s Tonys Snub For ‘Othello: ‘Narrow-Minded People Are In Charge’
Pauletta Washington isn’t holding back about Denzel Washington being shut out of this year’s #TonyAwards.
When asked by PEOPLE about her reaction to the Othello snub, Pauletta said,
“Now see, that’s not something you want to ask me. I can’t say that I was surprised that they didn’t.”
She continued,
“In my family, we’ve been through this a lot of times. A lot of times. And I think I can speak honestly, truthfully, and artistically that it was denied, you know, so you wonder why. But we don’t have to wonder why. It’s narrow-minded people that are in charge of making decisions and judgments.”

The Broadway revival stars Denzel as Othello opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago and is directed by Kenny Leon. It recently made history by earning $2.8 million in one week, the highest weekly gross for a Broadway play.
Still, Pauletta believes its massive success may have worked against it. “That’s the bottom line,” she told another outlet. “That’s a part of it. And you know that.”
