FDA Approves Lab-Grown Salmon For The 1st Time, Now Being Served At A Portland Restaurant

For the first time ever, the FDA has approved lab-grown fish.

Wildtype, a company that develops cultivated fish, received a “no questions” letter from the FDA, making it the fourth company to get this kind of approval for lab-grown meat or seafood.

Right now, their salmon is available at Kann, a Haitian restaurant in Portland, Oregon. A waitlist is open for five more restaurants to offer it next.

Although this FDA review is voluntary, experts say it helps with getting products onto menus and into stores.

Wildtype now joins #Upside Foods and # Good Meat, which already have approval to sell lab-grown chicken in the U.S. Meanwhile, #MissionBarns is waiting on final approval for its lab-grown pork fat.
