Woman Who Died In Unlicensed Recovery House After Plastic Surgery Passed From Acute Drug Toxicity Caused By Oxycodone & Bromazolam

What started as a cosmetic surgery trip ended in tragedy.

Ahmonique Miller, a 28-year-old mother, died just hours after undergoing a procedure at Avana Plastic Surgery in March. She had traveled to Miami with her sister, Kiera Barnes, and was staying at an unlicensed facility called Keyla’s Recovery House when she passed.

Now, a medical examiner’s report confirms her cause of death was “acute combined drug toxicity.” The drugs found in her system included the prescription painkiller oxycodone and a designer street drug called bromazolam. The report describes bromazolam as “a potent designer drug commonly found in counterfeit pills or powders.” There were no signs of surgical complications.

According to a Miami Police report, recovery house owner Keyla Oliver admitted to giving Ahmonique two Percocets and confirmed she was not licensed to practice medicine. Ahmonique’s sister told police Oliver also gave her muscle relaxers from her own prescription because Ahmonique’s medication “was not ready.”

The medical examiner’s office concluded that the combination of drugs impacts breathing and increases the risk of death during sleep. Her mother has since launched a petition calling for stronger regulation of unlicensed recovery homes in South Florida.
