26-Year-Old Brazilian Tourist Who Fell Into Active Volcano Found Dead After Four-Day Search

Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian dancer, was found dead after falling down a ravine at Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, Indonesia.

The Brazilian government confirmed her death following a four-day search hindered by inclement weather and difficult terrain. In a statement, they said:

“The Brazilian government informs, with deep sadness, the de@th of the Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, who had fallen from a cliff surrounding the trail near the crater of Mount Rinjani.”

Early in the search, officials said Marins fell about 500 feet and was spotted but unresponsive. She then slipped further down to more than 1,600 feet by Monday, June 23. There were reports that Marins was abandoned by her hiking group and again by Indonesian park officials. Speaking on the serious allegations,

Brazilian politician Tereza Cristina said on X:

“The entire Brazil cheered and prayed that the rescue would arrive in time to save the young woman from Niterói, Juliana Marins, alive. Unfortunately, they could not save her. Very sad. Our condolences to her family and friends. And may the Brazilian government, through Itamaraty, demand an investigation of the facts and the punishment of those responsible in Indonesia. In practice, Juliana was left behind twice: on the dangerous trail and after she fell off the cliff.”

Marins’ passing is a reminder of the dangers hikers face on Indonesia’s second-tallest volcano.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of Juliana Marins during this challenging time.
