Weeks after his father, retired NBA star Gilbert Arenas, attributed the incident to a vehicle malfunction, the 18-year-old shared his own detailed account of the frightening April 24th accident. During a recent interview, Alijah explained he was on his way home from an early morning workout when his vehicle began behaving strangely. He stated:

“Me going on the way to my house, the car didn’t really register that I was in there… So even to this day, the car app still says I’m at the gym.”

He then describes how the keypad and lights began turning on and off without his input, prompting him to try to pull over. Things escalated quickly when he unintentionally changed lanes.

“I switched lanes without meaning to, and I knew something was wrong,” he said. “And next thing you know, I can’t get back to the left lane.”

Alijah continued:

“So then a car is coming towards me, and I think that I’ll just pull over. So I speed up to pull over to the right in a neighborhood because there are cars parked on the street I’m on to the right. But when I’m speeding up to turn, I can’t stop. The wheel wasn’t responding to me as if I weren’t in the car.”

After hitting a curb, Alijah said he briefly passed out and slowly became aware that the vehicle had caught fire. He lost consciousness again until a group of bystanders rushed to help pull him from the car. Following the crash, he was placed in a medically induced coma but has since made a full recovery.

Still, Alijah took accountability for the situation, saying:

“Honestly, I take full responsibility for the crash, whether it was me, another car, a malfunction…I don’t want to put anyone else in this situation, the people who made the car, anything like that. I take full responsibility.”
