Los Angeles On Track For Lowest H*micide Rate Since 1968 As K*llings Drop Over 20% In 2025
Hom*cides in Los Angeles dropped over 20% in the first half of 2025, with 116 k*llings recorded through June 28, compared to 152 in the same period last year.
LAPD officials say the city is on track for its lowest annual hom*cide count since at least 1968.
“What we’re seeing is a broader trend that goes over several years,” said UC Irvine professor Charis Kubrin, noting falling hom*cide rates nationwide.
LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton credited targeted policing and gang intervention efforts but warned, “Such gains could be eroded if the department continues to lose officers.”
Jeff Asher called this “the great m*rder decline,” linking it to “strong investment in communities from private and public sources after the shock of the pandemic.” Southern neighborhoods, including South L.A.’s 77th Street and Southeast Divisions, saw the sharpest declines.
Despite political rhetoric suggesting otherwise, Kubrin said, “L.A. still reports lower hom*cide rates than other major cities.”
L.A. residents, what are your thoughts on this?
