Michelle Obama Says She Avoided Braids in the White House Because “The World Wasn’t Ready” — Calls Out the “Pure Hypocrisy” Behind It
Michelle Obama is speaking candidly about how something as simple as a hairstyle became political during her time as First Lady.
“As First Lady, I did not wear braids,” Obama told People. “The world wasn’t ready. They were just getting adjusted to having a Black family in the White House.”
Now, at 61, the former First Lady says she’s embracing her natural hair — and herself — more freely than ever.
“I’m freer now. I can show up as myself,” she said.
But Michelle also opened up about the double standards she faced, describing the way her looks were constantly scrutinized as “pure hypocrisy.”
“People thought it was a compliment when they’d say, ‘You’re so fashionable,’ but it was loaded,” she explained. “As if caring about how you look somehow means you’re not smart or serious.”
Her reflections come ahead of the release of her new book, The Look, which explores her journey through style, identity, and power. And for Michelle, the story behind her braids isn’t just about beauty — it’s about freedom.
“With each decade, I’ve grown wiser,” she added. “This version of Michelle probably cares less about what other people think.”
