Chicago Woman Claims She Was Forced To Give Birth In A Car After Nurse Discharged Her While She Was In Active Labor
In the latest “wait… what?” headline:
A family in #Indiana says that their relative, Mercedes Wells, was discharged from Franciscan Health Crown Point hospital while she was in active labor, forcing her to give birth on the side of a road.
According to the family, hospital staff told her to “go home to wait for her labor to progress.”
After being wheeled out, Mercedes gave birth eight minutes later in her truck. Her husband, Leon, delivered the baby. The couple’s attorney spoke on the disheartening situation and said, “Can we agree that a woman in active labor should not be sent away without first being seen by a doctor?”
The hospital’s CEO issued a statement saying, “The video and the comments it has generated are deeply troubling … we understand the concern this has raised.” They added that the situation is under investigation and asserted that the incident “does not accurately represent … our values.”
