R. Kelly Removed From Solitary Confinement After Prison Review – Lawyer Says “No Impropriety Whatsoever” Found

R. Kelly has been removed from solitary confinement following a prison review of his behavior at a federal facility in North Carolina.

The R&B singer was placed in confinement for roughly two weeks last month after prison officials searched his cell and discovered a notebook containing the phone number of a retired prison warden. Authorities launched an internal review into how Kelly obtained the number.

Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, later told Los Angeles Magazine that “no impropriety whatsoever was found with respect to his possession of the telephone number of a former prison official.” Brindley said the singer had been temporarily placed in the Special Housing Unit (SHU) during the review.

“He was kept in special housing for approximately two weeks without legitimate cause before the facility was compelled to release him,” Brindley said.

A photo has since surfaced online showing 59-year-old Kelly posing with another inmate while incarcerated.

Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence after being convicted of racketeering and sex crimes in New York and Illinois in 2021 and 2023. The singer has previously claimed a solitary confinement employee attempted to kill him and alleged that a staff member tried to administer a potentially lethal amount of medication. In February, Reshona Landfair — the then-child victim in the infamous 2000s R. Kelly videotape — also released a memoir about being groomed by the singer titled Who’s Watching Shorty?
