WNBA Star Brittney Griner Files For Divorce From Wife Cherelle After 8 Years Together
Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, are ending their marriage.
According to PEOPLE, the WNBA star filed for divorce in Fulton County, Georgia, on Thursday (July 30), after nearly eight years together. In the filing, Brittney described the marriage as “irretrievably broken” and stated that the couple has been separated since July 24.
The couple, who met while attending Baylor University, married in 2018 and share a two-year-old son, Bash. Brittney is seeking joint legal custody of their son, as well as an equitable division of the couple’s marital assets while retaining her separate, nonmarital property.
Cherelle became widely known for advocating tirelessly on Brittney’s behalf after the basketball star was detained in Russia in 2022 on drug charges. Following Brittney’s release in a high-profile prisoner exchange later that year, the couple frequently spoke publicly about rebuilding their lives together and eventually welcomed their son.
Neither Brittney nor Cherelle has publicly commented on the divorce filing.
