Ciara Defends Using the N-Word,’It’s All About How You Say It.’
The Paula Deen controversy yet again, has folk taking sides–is using the N-Word EVER okay, even for people of color? This week, singer Ciara chimed in on Access Hollywood Live. When the show’s co-host Billy Bush brought up the N-word debate, and noted that the word is used in Ciara’s new song, “I’m Out,” he asked her to chime in on the topic. “What are your feelings about it… about the N-word,” Billy asked. The 27-year-old explained:
As an entertainer you have fun and it’s all about the context it’s used in. I am an African-American woman, so I can identify with that word in different ways. It’s all about the context and in my case I know I can have fun because I know where I’m coming from with it. You have to be light-hearted and it has to be in a certain way. I cannot hear another person of another race saying, ‘you this’ like ‘you that.’ Again, it’s all about how you say it and what context it’s used in.
She continued:
That word has as much power as you give it. That word is so old that it references the context of where it comes from. I want to make sure I’m clear about that, it doesn’t mean that same thing that it could have meant years ago, especially when we can have fun about it. I’m all about empowering women, I’m all about empowering myself. As a human being, I would never use any word that would be degrading to myself… or to anyone else.
What are your thoughts on Ciara’s reasoning for using the n-word? And should artists be limited creatively to not use the term?

I don’t agree…but I do understand that Ciara’s generation does use that word loosely or in a “different context” and I HATE IT, as well as sagging pants & explicit/vulgar lyrics in music. She grew up in a different point in time and although she says she can identify with the word in different ways, she probably hasn’t experienced or felt the effects that could make one totally pissed off enough to never want to use that word again or be identified with it. For me, I don’t care how someone wants to justify it, it’s still attached to a horrible, negative era in black history and you can’t change it to be something “fun”, “cool” or “positive”. No excuse, but this is why white’s & other races feel that they can say it because we say it so freely to each other. WE need to set the tone and be the example for the non-use and no tolerance of this word. Point blank period.
and one more thing; Ciara sounds very conflicted trying to defend the word but in the next breath says she is all about empowerment and would never use any word that would be degrading to herself or anyone else….hello! There is nothing empowering and more degrading than that word. Smh…
Wow!! Ciara you really stuck your foot in your mouth. That is totally wrong. It does not have a damn thing to do with how you say it. She’s black she should know how hard blacks had it back in the day. So for her to say that. Ciara needs to stay off of a talk show with that BS. Hell no a white person BETTER not call me a nigga to my face, I don’t care how they say it. Ciara is a dumb azz won’t buy your records anymore. FYI I have every cd she has made. But the buck stops here.
Really?? It’s the way you say it? I didn’t know there was a “way” you are supposed to use degrading terms. She should of kept quit!
Why say it at all there are so many words in the english vocabulary.
I’m starting to get very annoyed with these stars/entertainers thinking its okay to use the n word by justifying they use it in a positive light and that word has as much power as you give…GTFOH!!! It’s total disregard for what our ancestor endured with that word….ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
