Stacey Abrams Makes History, Seeking To Become 1st Black Female Governor
This week, Stacey Abrams made history as the first black woman to win a democratic gubernatorial primary. Abrams, 44, is attempting to become the first black woman governor of the United States and Georgia’s first woman governor. For Democrats, this is a major milestone especially during a time in which Republicans are the majority. Abrams told supporters during her victory speech,
..this is our time to build a Georgia where everyone has the freedom and opportunity to thrive because our best lives are within reach. This is our moment, our chance to lift up Georgia. And if we fight, if we push, if we work, we will win! And so, tonight, I say thank you all. Now let’s go get it done!
Abrams won with 76.5 percent, or 423,163 votes, to opponent Stacey Evans’ 23.5 percent, or 130,234 votes, with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
Abrams’ family background has a story of hardships experienced. She comes from a family of six children and had to overcome racial and economic challenges during her childhood. Having made it through her struggles, Abrams later became a lawyer and Georgia state representative. Aimee Castenell, a spokesperson for the progressive Working Families Party, stated,
Stacey Abrams is expanding the limits of the possible in American politics.
According to reports, Abram’s is responsible for trying to turn the state of Georgia into a Democratic state by rallying Democratic-leaning voters and people of color who usually did not show up to vote.
Congrats to her!
