Zoe Kravitz Had An Eating Disorder At 13: I Always Felt Chunky Around My Mom & My Dad Was Surrounded By Supermodels
Zoe Kravitz is certainly coming into her own! She’s known as much more than the daughter of singer Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet. In a new interview, the 30-year-old actress and model opens up about how having famous parents impacted her at a young age, her new husband Karl Glusman, and how she learned that she’d have to prove herself as an actress.
Kravitz tied the knot with actor Glusman in a secret wedding last month. The two met through a mutual friend, which seemed to be her preference when it comes to dating in Hollywood. She said she wasn’t on the hunt for something serious, but her chemistry with Glusman was a pleasant surprise.
“I love that it wasn’t on an app and that it wasn’t on a movie set. My friend knew that I wanted to meet someone – not even to get serious, I think just to get laid, to be completely honest with you – and he brought Karl. I instantly felt something – then he turned around and started talking to the blonde girl next to him and I was like, ‘Wait, what?’. But he later told me that he was just nervous.”
She added that they don’t children, just
“not anytime soon.”
While her parents are iconic entertainers, she said she felt alone when it came to her Caucasian counterparts growing up.
“My peers were wealthy white kids – jocks and cheerleaders – and I felt super alienated. On the cusp of being a teenager you’re trying to figure out who you are, and when there is no reflection of you anywhere you look, you feel like a freak.”
She hinted that this type of isolation is one of the factors that lead to her having an eating disorder when she was 13.
“I think it came from a lot of things. My mother was so beautiful and so tiny, I always felt clunky around her, and then my dad was always surrounded by supermodels… I was short, and you feel uncomfortable in your skin anyway at that age.”
Now, she said she’s been able to build up her confidence, especially after realizing that her famous parents weren’t a golden ticket she needed to become a successful actress.
“When I got into acting school, I never knew if it was because of my audition or my last name. But I’m slowly learning that no director will hire me because of my surname. The first 10 years of my career have been about proving myself. I now finally feel like I’m in a place where I’m able to say, ‘I deserve this,’ and, “I worked really hard.’ I’m getting better.”
This isn’t the first time Zoe has opened up about her struggle with accepting herself. She shared her thoughts on racism in 2017 and said,
“Racism is very real, and white supremacy is going strong. I am definitely mixed. Both my parents are mixed. I have white family on both sides. The older I get, the more I experience life, I am identifying more and more with being black, and what that means — being more and more proud of that and feeling connected to my roots and my history. It’s been a really interesting journey because I was always one of the only black kids in any of my schools. I went to private schools full of white kids.”
She added,
“I think a lot of that made me want to blend in or not be looked at as black. The white kids are always talking about your hair and making you feel weird. I had this struggle of accepting myself as black and loving that part of myself. And now I’m so in love with my culture and so proud to be black. It’s still ongoing, but a big shift has occurred. My dad especially has always been very connected to his history, and it’s important to him that I understand where I come from.”
