Serena Williams Opens Up After U.S. Open Loss – “It’s Inexcusable For Me To Play At That Level”
On Saturday (Sept. 7th), tennis star Serena Williams took a hard fought loss in the 2019 U.S. Open against 19-year-old, Bianca Andreescu, who won two sets, 6-3, 7-5. The teen from Mississauga, Ontario, became the first Canadian woman to win a Slam singles title.

After their 1 hour and 40 minute match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Serena spoke on her loss stating:
“I think this was the worst match I’ve played all tournament. I can definitely say I’m not really happy, but I have to take it one moment at a time. I honestly didn’t play my best. It’s inexcusable for me to play at that level.”
Serena took on 33 unforced errors while her first serve was at a mere 44%, well below her average and by far her lowest percentage at this Open.

She continues,
“I was thinking, OK, Serena, you didn’t miss a serve, you lost serve maybe twice in the whole tournament. And you didn’t hit a first serve in today. How do I play at a level like this in a final?”
As Serena turns 38 later this month, she says she will continue to play to hopefully tie the highest number of Major titles at 24. She says,
“I’m not necessarily chasing a record, I’m just trying to win Grand Slams. I just am still here. I’m still doing what I can do.”

As previously reported, Serena has faced some tough losses as she retired from a recent Rogers Cup Final in last min against another 19-year-Old, Bianca Andreescu. After a medical timeout, Serena ended the match due to severe back pain. Serena later addressed the crowd in tears as she accept her award.
“I’m not a crier, but, thank you guys. I’m sorry I couldn’t do it today. I tried but I just couldn’t do it.”
The upset by teenager at The Open over the superstar brought the ESPN network a record breaking rating for the tournament with a 2.7 overnight, up 13% from a 2.4 year ago.
