21 Savage Reacts To Backlash Over Comments On Illegal U.S. Child Immigrants ‘People Love To Talk About Stuff They Don’t Know About’
21 Savage seems to be standing by his comments that children who are illegal U.S. immigrants should automatically become citizens. He spoke out after receiving lots of cricticism for his statements. He said Friday (Oct. 4),
“People love to talk about stuff they don’t know anything about.”
He went on to say that he’s made a name for himself despite his citizenship status.
I never asked for sympathy. I’m a stand up man I face my problems head on I never ask for pitty… even with all the hurdles in my life I still managed to get up and go make myself without being able to get a job, license or go to college not by choice either … I never complained and I’m doing great and wticking with my peers without ever doing an overseas show… I’m a hustler!!!! So save the excuses, hate and envy and get up and go get it!!!!!”
21 Savage made headlines earlier this year after was sent to ICE detention for being int he U.S. on an expired visa. While the rapper was raised in Atlanta, Ga., he is actually British, and his visa expired in the mid-2000s. He sparked attention from the government after he tried to get a new visa in 2017.
He caused even more controversy when he made statements that children who are in the U.S. illegally should become citizens with no problem.
He said while accepting an award from the National Immigration Law Center:
“When you’re a child, you don’t know what’s going on. Now, you grow up and got to figure it out. Can’t get a job. Can’t get a license. I’m one of the lucky ones who became successful. It’s a lot of people who can’t.”
“When you ain’t got no choice, you should be exempt. It’s not like I was 30, woke up and moved over here. I’ve been here since I was like 7 or 8, probably younger than that. I didn’t know anything about visas and all that. I just knew we were moving to a new place.”
“I feel like we should be exempt. I feel like we should automatically become citizens.”
He added,
“We got a fight that we need to continue in this country. It ain’t over yet. Even after everything is cool with me, we still have to fight and help people who can’t fight for themselves.”
