Mo’Nique — Netflix Responds To Comedian’s Gender And Racial Discrimination Lawsuit ‘We Believe Our Opening Offer To Mo’Nique Was Fair, Which Is Why We’ll Be Fighting This Lawsuit’
Netflix has responded after Mo’Nique made her latest move against the streaming service.
She filed a lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that she was discriminated against because of her race and gender, when the company offered her $500,000 for a special, but offered comedians like Amy Schumer and Chris Rock multi-million dollar deals.
Netflix said in a statement Thursday (Nov. 14),
“We care deeply about inclusion, equity, and diversity and take any accusations of discrimination very seriously. We believe our opening offer to Mo’Nique was fair — which is why we will be fighting this lawsuit.”
As for the lawsuit, the claims against Netflix read,
“Netflix courted Mo’Nique, saw what she had to offer and made her an offer. But the offer Netflix made Mo’Nique wreaked [sic] of discrimination; it perpetuated the pay gap suffered by Black women.”
“Netflix’s business practice of paying Black women less than non-Black women for substantially equal or similar work causes harm to Plaintiff that outweighs any reason Netflix may have for doing so.”
It explains that Mo’Nique attempted to negotiate pay that she felt was more reasonable, but Netflix refused to budge.
“In response, Netflix did the opposite. It dug its heels in the ground, refused to negotiate fairly and stood behind its discriminatory offer.”
It also pointed that a White comedian (who is said to be Amy Schumer) had more success when negotiating her contract with Netflix.
“In stark contrast, when a white female comedian objected to her offer (given how much lower it was than comparable males), Netflix reconsidered and upped her offer.”
“In short, as this lawsuit shows, Netflix’s treatment of Mo’Nique began with a discriminatory low-ball offer and ended with a blacklisting act of retaliation.”
Mo’Nique also confirmed news of the lawsuit on social media.
