Jussie Smollett Says “You Gotta Fight Or Die” As He Maintains His Innocence

Jussie Smollett said he’ll never give up fighting to prove his innocence. The former “Empire” star is facing six new charges a year after being accused of staging a hate crime against himself.

The Daily Mail obtained a new video of the actor as he made his way through the airport. When asked how he was doing, he said “good.” He also laughed when he was asked about how his experience has impacted his view of the justice system. He referenced his lawyer who was behind him on an escalator. She said,

“He’s holding up. He’ll get through this. We have faith that the system will eventually work in our favor.”

Jussie Smollett added,

“It’s definitely frustrating but you just gotta fight or die at this point…I don’t claim to be innocent, I am innocent.”

Because he previously faced 16 felony charges for allegedly filing a false police report, his lawyer said she’s confident that double jeopardy will be on their side as she filed a motion for the new charges to be dismissed.

“I do, that’s why we filed the motion.”

Smollett also responded after being asked if double jeopardy or his innocence is the best defense.

“The truth is the best defense.”

It was previously reported that Smollett pleaded not guilty to the new charges recently.

His lawyer spoke on the charges shortly after they made headlines.

“This indictment raises serious questions about the integrity of the investigation that led to the renewed charges against Mr. Smollett, not the least of which is the use of the same CPD detectives who were part of the original investigation into the attack on Mr. Smollett to conduct the current investigation, despite Mr. Smollett’s pending civil claims against the City of Chicago and CPD officers for malicious prosecution. And one of the two witnesses who testified before the grand jury is the very same detective Mr. Smollett is currently suing for his role in the initial prosecution of him.”

“After more than five months of investigation, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has not found any evidence of wrongdoing whatsoever related to the dismissal of the charges against Mr. Smollett. Rather, the charges were appropriately dismissed the first time because they were not supported by the evidence. The attempt to re-prosecute Mr. Smollett one year later on the eve of the Cook County State’s Attorney election is clearly all about politics not justice.”
