Timbaland Files Trademark For Verzuz
Since the world has been quarantined under stay-at-home orders for the highly contagious coronavirus, social media has been set on fire by hit-for-hit battles between music legends, such as Lil Jon vs. T-Pain, and the latest controversial mash-up – Teddy Riley and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. These battles have been nicknamed and branded under the name, Verzuz.
But after witnessing massive global engagement among music fans, the creators of Verzuz – super-producers, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland – are ready to take the brand to the next level. Timbaland has filed an official trademark for Verzuz TV, hinting that the battles could be televised in the future.

Filed earlier this month, the description reads:
“Goods and Services: Entertainment services in the nature of continuing program series featuring live action, comedy and drama through cable television, broadcast, internet, video-on-demand and through other forms of transmission media…”
Interestingly enough, Timbaland denies rumors of taking Verzuz from social media to the small screen just days after filing for the trademark:
“Right now we just want to keep it for the culture because it’s so organic. We don’t want to bring [major networks] in right away. We just wanna keep it where people are entertained because we live in a world where 16 million people lost jobs. We don’t wanna get into all the politics of it, we wanna keep it natural.”
One big brand – Jay-Z’s Tidal streaming service – has already partnered with Verzuz, launching accompanying playlists on the platform directly after the Instagram Live battles air. However, Timbaland is noticeably the only name mentioned in the trademark application. Is Swizz Beatz abandoning the venture?
