Ex-New Orleans Mayor, Ray Nagin, Released From Prison 3 Years Early Due To Coronavirus
Ex-New Orleans Mayor, Ray Nagin, is the latest person to be released early from prison due to the coronavirus pandemic. As we previously reported, in 2013, the 63-year-old former politician was indicted on 21 corruption charges including wire fraud, money laundering, and bribery that took place during his political career. Even though Ray Nagin pleaded not guilty he was still convicted on 20 out of 21 counts in 2014. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was expected to be released sometime in May of 2023.
However, according to reports, on Monday, April 27th Ray Nagin was released from prison early, almost 3 years before his expected scheduled release date. This was all possible thanks to U.S. Attorney General William Barr, who ordered the Bureau of Prisons to address concerns pertaining to the coronavirus pandemic by allowing certain federal prisoners to be released early from prison.
Ray Nagin’s brother-in-law, Cedric Smith, confirmed his release from prison and gave an update on how he’s doing so far. He said,
“[Ray Nagin] is doing fine. It’s a great day for our family. We’re really happy he’s back home.”
