Trayvon Martin’s Mom Sybrina Fulton On George Floyd’s Death: It Was Supposed To Be An Arrest, Not A Murder!

There’s no question, the first half of 2020 has been really difficult for many people across the globe.  Now, with protesters around the nation fighting to be heard for black equality amid the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, celebrities and well-known figures are collectively speaking out loud.  Sybrina Fulton, activist and mother of then, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was fatally killed by George Zimmerman in 2012, speaks out with a couple of powerful messages posted to her Instagram account.

Sybrina Fulton captions these impactful messages:

One message reads,

“I keep seeing posts about ‘protesters’ looting: Don’t get it twisted: Protestors are protesters & looters are looting”

Another reads,

“Somebody said it was supposed to be a protest, not a robbery… Well it was supposed to be an arrest, not a murder!!”

These statements come in the midst of protests erupting all over the world due to the outrage over the death of George Floyd, particularly, the lack of arrests made of three additional officers who were involved in his killing, alongside former officer Derek Chauvin.

Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York are just a few hot spots that have seen some of the worst rioting in history.  What was expected to start out as peaceful protests have become extreme looting and rioting amongst the people.

Kaleigh Barris, daughter of writer and creator of Black-ish, Kenya Barris, shared a video from a peaceful protest where over 200 people were still arrested.

Sybrina Fulton announced in 2019 that she will be running for office after serving 30 years as a public servant.  She announced,

“My time as a public servant began 30 years ago at Miami-Dade County. Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our communities and make them safer. But the work is not done. I am proud to announce that I will run to represent District 1 on the county commission.”
