Ashton Kutcher Delivers Tearful #BlackLivesMatter Message: For Some People, Black Lives Don’t Matter At All

Ashton Kutcher was one of many to participate in Black Out Tuesday this week.

He also shared the same blank, black square just days before, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

His posts were met with much praise and criticism alike.

One user wrote,

Wow, even you are jumping on this bandwagon? Incredible. I’m currently going through my newsfeed and unfriending/unfollowing anyone that’s jumping on the BLM bandwagon. This is a group that’s all about destruction, billions of dollars in damages, death and division. So, I’m glad you guys have picked a side.

Ashton Kutcher addressed his critics with a tearful message.

He begins,

“So, on Saturday, I posted a black out of my social media channels and just posted ‘BLM’ and a lot of folks responded, ‘All Lives Matter.’ And, I want to talk about that a little bit because I don’t think the people that are posting ‘All Lives Matter’ should be canceled. I think they should be educated.”

Ashton Kutcher continues about an experience he and his wife, actress, Mila Kunis, shared with their two children while reading bedtime books.

“We all agree all lives matter. But I had a really poignant experience tonight when I was putting my kids down to bed that lent the words for why black lives matter. So, usually Mila and I put our kids to bed and we read them a book and our daughter always gets to go first.”

“And tonight, as we were reading her book, my son says, ‘Wait, why don’t I get to go first?’ And Mila said, ‘Because girls go first.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, but boys go first.’ And I looked at him and I said, ‘No, girls go first.’ And I said, ‘You know why girls go first? For you and me, girls go first. And the reason why is, for some boys, girls don’t get a go at all. And so for you and me, girls go first.'”

With tears in his eyes, Ashton Kutcher concluded,

“So when it comes to Black Lives Matter, I think [the] folks that are writing ‘All Lives Matter’ need to understand is that for some people…black lives don’t matter at all. So for us, black lives matter. So, while you may have the best intentions in saying, ‘All Lives Matter,’ remember: For some people, black lives don’t matter at all.”

This video and its sentiments were met with a lot of support from fans.  @tjjefferson writes,

“What you’re teaching your kids is crucial.  Hatred is taught.  And I understand your message.  Some just don’t want to understand…some just can’t take their own feelings out of the equation to see where another person is coming from.”
