George Clooney Mocks Donald Trump’s Claim He Made Juneteenth Famous, Donates $500K To Equal Justice Initiative
Donald Trump(74) sparked quite the controversy when he took the credit for making Juneteenth famous. He said in a recent interview,
“I did something good…I made Juneteenth very famous. It’s actually an important event, an important time. But nobody had ever heard of it.”
Juneteenth is an American holiday that commemorates the news of the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863, reaching Texas, announcing that all slaves were free. Donald Trump’s comments led to much outrage, some laughs, and even a monetary response from Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney.
After hearing about Donald Trump’s comments, George Clooney poked fun at the president and made a donation to the Equal Justice Initiative in his honor. George Clooney released the following statement:
“Thank you President Trump for ‘making Juneteenth famous.’ Much like when Bull Connor made ‘Civil Rights’ famous. My family will be donating $500,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative in honor of your heroic efforts.”
Donald Trump previously scheduled his first rally in more than 100 days on Juneteenth in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the site of one of the most prominent concentrations of Black businesses in the United States during the early 20th century called Black Wallstreet. Black Wallstreet was destroyed in what was later called the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, in which white residents massacred as many as 300 black residents.
He later changed the date to June 20th and tweeted,
“We had previously scheduled our #MAGA Rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for June 19th – a big deal. Unfortunately, however, this would fall on the Juneteenth Holiday. Many of my African American friends and supporters have reached out to suggest that we consider changing the date out of respect for this Holiday, and observance of this important occasion and all that it represents.”

He continued,
“I have therefore decided to move our rally to Saturday, June 20th, in order to honor their requests…We have already had ticket requests in excess of 200,000 people. I look forward to seeing everyone in Oklahoma!”
