Garcelle Beauvais Says She ‘Didn’t Want To Be Labeled An Angry Black Woman’ On ‘RHOBH’

American actress Garcelle Beauvais has recently revealed that she felt pressure in being the first black woman on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reality TV series. As previously reported, Garcelle Beauvais joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for the show’s 10th season.

In a statement, Garcelle Beauvais released prior to the start of the season she shared how excited she was to be joining the cast.

“I am excited and proud to be joining the cast of such a wildly popular and beloved show like ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.’ As a working actor who has been in the industry for some time, it’s exhilarating to have the opportunity to delve into a new chapter in the entertainment spectrum. As the first African-American housewife in the ‘Beverly Hills’ franchise, I am honored and humbled by this awesome opportunity to exemplify the fact that Black Girl Magic lives and thrives in every zip code!”

Andy Cohen, who is an executive producer for the Housewives franchise, also shared his excitement that Garcelle Beauvais was going to be on the show.

“What makes Garcelle Beauvais an incredible addition to the group, beyond the fact that she knows [Lisa] Rinna, she knows Denise [Richards], she knows the women, is — the thing that really struck me when I saw her interview is how incredibly open she is. She is ready to go in this genre. In much of the same way that people responded to Denise so positively. I think that people will really get that about Garcelle too. It’s just fantastic that she’s coming on. I’m thrilled. I’m so happy.”

As excited as Garcelle Beauvais may have been for her new career venture, she was also a little worried about the expectations that people may have for her. During a recent interview, the actress was asked if she felt pressure being the first black woman on the show and she responded

“Yes, I definitely felt pressure that people wanted me to come in and do a certain thing or have a chip on my shoulder.”

Garcelle Beauvais continued

“I really didn’t want to be labeled an angry black woman, That’s not who I am. I just wanted to stay true to who I am, and I think that’s what people have been able to see so far.”

The ‘Merry Happy Whatever’ actress also shared that she had to get used to the comments people were making about her online.

“I was not prepared for how social media takes over. Lisa Rinna told me that it is one thing to shoot the show. It’s another to see it and what the others have said about you. Then the whole world weighs in. There are many layers to be on the show.”

She’s certainly made her mark the show already as she dropped the bombshell that she and Will Smith once dated.
