Washington Redskins Announce Name & Logo Change

Washington Redskins Announce Name & Logo Change
The uproar over the tragic deaths of several Black people at the hands of law enforcement has sparked conversations about racism, leading long-standing brands with ties to racist connotations to make changes. One of the first brands to do this was breakfast favorite, Aunt Jemima. The newest brand to announce changes is NFL team, Washington Redskins. After 87 years of using it, the Washington Redskins revealed that they’ll be implementing a new name and logo after criticism that its racial connotation offended the Native American community.
The official press release read:
“On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name. That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward.
Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.
Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

In recent weeks, their sponsor FedEx threatened to remove signage from the Redskins’ stadium if the name weren’t changed. Nike, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, Walmart, and Amazon have all removed their merchandise from their websites.
The football team’s new name and logo have yet to be revealed.
