Michael Jordan – The Man Convicted In The Murder Of His Father Will Be Paroled
Larry Demery, who plead guilty to assisting in the murder of NBA legend Michael Jordan’s father James Jordan Sr. will be released on parole in 2023. The state Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission made the announcement this week (August 18). Larry Demery, 45, is currently serving a life sentence for his role in the killing of James Jordan Sr.
Michael Jordan’s father was shot to death in July of 1993 at a North Carolina rest stop. Larry Demery pleaded guilty in 1995 to murder and robbery charges and agreed to testify against Daniel Green, the other suspect in the case. At Daniel Green’s trial in 1996, Larry said Daniel shot James Jordan Sr. when they found him sleeping in his car on July 23, 1993, on U.S. 74 south of Lumberton.
Larry and Daniel were 18 and 19 years old at the time. Daniel Green received a life sentence for his role in the murder. However, Daniel in recent years has attempted to get a new trial. His lawyer has argued that Daniel had nothing to do with the initial killing and claims that he was at a party when Larry Demery sought his assistance. Green admitted to taking some of Jordan’s property and helping Larry get rid of the body. A judge in 2019 denied Daniel Green’s request for a hearing that could have led to a new trial.
Michael Jordan affectionately called his father, “Pops,” and when Oprah Winfrey asked if he wanted to know the reason Larry and Daniel targeted him, he replied:
“I’m a very optimistic person in the sense that I don’t look at the real bad part of it. I looked at it that no matter what happened to my father, he’s not here…I don’t want to know. Because it probably would hurt me even more just to know their reasons. Because if it is, it’s going to be totally meaningless for the reasons…It’s better that I don’t know.”
