Gabrielle Union Says Nation’s Racial Tension & Pandemic Put Her PTSD ‘In Overdrive’: There’s Just Terror In My Body
As the world is still trying to adjust to the unprecedented pandemic and racial tension amid the numerous cases of police shootings and killings, many people, including Gabrielle Union, are figuring out how to cope with such a heavy load.
Gabrielle Union recently opened up about the effect that the state of our nation is having on her. In a new cover story for Women’s Health, the L.A.’s Finest actress opens up about her PTSD, which she has been diagnosed with since the age of 19 after being raped at gunpoint.
She says,
‘The combination of a pandemic and this racial reckoning, alongside being inundated with [images of] the brutalization of Black bodies, has sent my PTSD into overdrive. There’s just terror in my body.’

Union talked about how she’s processed the trauma, which according to her has become ‘second nature’.
‘I break out my emotional fix-me toolkit, and I try to run through all the situations. I call it my ‘what’s the likelihood of X happening?’ method.’
She continued to explain,
‘If I’m fearful about going into a store because I’m anxious about being robbed, I’ll make myself feel better by going to one where there will be witnesses to cut down those chances. It’s been this way since ’92.’
