The Oscar nominations are in and some of our faves received nods — including Viola Davis who made history!
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis, Taylour Paige, the late Chadwick Boseman, and more received a nomination for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup, and Hairstyling.
Chadwick Boseman received a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role while Viola Davis is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for their portrayals in the Netflix film. Viola Davis’ nod makes her the most-nominated Black actress ever. She’s also the only Black woman to have two Best Actress nominations. She received a nomination for The Help in 2012, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Doubt in 2009, and won Best Supporting Actress for Fences in 2017.
Andra Day, who starred as Billie Holiday in Hulu’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday is also nominated in the prestigious category.
Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods is nominated for Best Original Score while Regina King’s One Night In Miami (written by Kemp Powers) is up for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Judas & The Black Messiah, starring Daniel Kaluuya, Lakeith Stanfield, and more is nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
“Fight For You”, performed by H.E.R., from the film is nominated for Best Original Song with One Night In Miami’s “Speak Now,” performed by Leslie Odom, Jr.
Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield also received nominations for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for their portrayals in Judas and the Black Messiah. Leslie Odom, Jr., who played legendary singer Sam Cooke in One Night In Miami is nominated for the same category.
Disney’s Soul is nominated for Best Sound and Best Animated Feature Film.
