The granddaughter of late iconic singer Aretha Franklin is speaking out against an upcoming series about her life.
Victorie Franklin took to Instagram to spread the word about her protest against Genius: Aretha, which is scheduled to air on National Geographic on March 21st. It will start streaming on Hulu the following day. The project stars Cynthia Erivo as Aretha Franklin and Courtney B. Vance as the singer’s father, C.L. Franklin.
It’s part of the network’s Genius series. The lives of Albert Einstein and Picasso were featured in previous seasons.
Victorie Franklin shared a graphic of the protest and said the family hasn’t been included.
“Hey guys! If you’re in the city it would mean so much to me and my family if you could come out and support us this Saturday in protesting against the new Genius series coming out about my grandmother. Throughout this process they have neglected to include my family and we don’t believe the series will be an honest reflection of who my grandmother was. We ask that you stand in solidarity with us and honor my grandmothers legacy. Hope to see you there family! Thank you #justiceforthequeen“

She also shared a photo of her holding a headshot of the singer and kept the caption simple with,
“Justice for Aretha”
