Beyoncé & Her Mom Tina Lawson To Provide COVID-19 Mobile Testing & Groceries In Houston, Says ‘The Virus Is Wreaking Havoc On The Black Community’
#IDIDMYPART mobile Covid-19 testing is coming to Houston, Texas. Beyoncé’s BEYGOOD Foundation has teamed up with her mom, and fellow philanthropist, Tina Knowles Lawson, to support this campaign and bring testing relief to Beyoncé’s hometown.
In an online article posted on Beyoncé.com, it states the havoc that the coronavirus is causing on African Americans. Tina Knowles Lawson said,
“The virus is wreaking havoc on the Black community so we need a movement to prioritize our health.”
They cited a recent report from the CDC that as of April 23, 33.7% of COVID patients were African American, even though African Americans comprise 13% of U.S. population. And as per the CDC, as of mid-April, roughly 33% of all fatalities are African American.
Taking place during this Mother’s Day weekend, the #IDIDMYPART mobile testing relief campaign,
“aims to bring awareness to the daily testing administered by United Memorial Medical Center, initiated by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee.”
It also states:
“Participants receiving a test will also receive a grocery gift card from BeyGOOD, purchased from H-E-B Grocery Company, the supermarket chain with more than 350 stores throughout the state of Texas. H-E-B will match BeyGOOD’s contribution.
A voucher for a hot meal, also compliments of BeyGOOD, will be provided to participants and the medical staff administering the test, to two local favorite restaurants, Frenchy’s Chicken and Burns Original Bar-B-Q. Participants will also receive written materials with all the up-to-date information on how to stay safe. In observance of social distancing measures, supplies will be placed in vehicle trunks as participants exit the testing sites.”
Beyoncé’s BEYGOOD Foundation is heavily active in the Houston community. In 2017, Beyoncé and her organization teamed up with Houston officials to bring relief to Hurricane Harvey victims.
The Mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, also tweeted in early May 2020 both Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion will receive their own respective days in Houston for their efforts in “Holding down #HTown”.
He writes:
“#Htown’s @Beyonce &@theestallion dropped a new remix that is just #Savage. Because of both artists contributions to uplifting our communities, holding down #HTown, & for helping us remain #HoustonStrong our city will present both artists with their own respective days.”
Actor/writer/director and philanthropist, Tyler Perry, has accepted the #IDIDMYPART challenge and will bring his own campaign to Atlanta, Georgia, in hopes to bring the same awareness. He will then challenge another celebrity in their own respective city to keep the movement going. Actress Octavia Spencer is also taking the challenge to her hometown in Mississippi.
